As one of the founders and the current Vice-Chair of the South Florida Lambda Chorale, Carmine Martorilli has been a popular entertainer in our community for nearly two decades. A dance performer from his early teens, he often teamed with his sister Joan, who later became a noted opera singer and voice coach in her own right. Following a two-year stint in the U.S. Army, Carmine studied ballet and theatre at the Boston Conservatory of Music, appearing in productions of “The Children’s Hour” and the musical “Finian’s Rainbow.” He moved from Boston to South Florida in 1969, where he began a highly successful career as an Interior Designer. He also established himself as a bass/baritone singer with local gay choirs, as well as becoming heavily involved in numerous community projects, activities and groups, such as the Names Project, the annual SMART Ride HIV/AIDS fundraiser, Broward House, and the MCC Sunshine Cathedral, among others. Still going strong at age 73, Carmine can be heard again this June when the Lambda Chorale continues its 2007-2008 season.
